What looked like a crack house turned out to be a children’s hostel.
She walked into the hostel and a young child asked her what she was seeking.
She wasn’t sure.
All she remembered was falling down. When she came to, she was standing in front of this building.
“What are you looking for?”
- “I don’t know. Answers!”
“Try to breathe easy”, the child said. “Worry is a guillotine. Wake up!”
The Beatles’ “Yesterday” was playing the background.
She was soaked again. Muddy. Filthy. Dammit.
The least her mind could do was to get rid of the filth.
But who could rely on that?
She was not sitting on the couch anymore. Maybe she should have tried that 1,2,3 breathing exercise she saw on youtube the other day.
In front of her was a lake. As far as she could tell at least. The fog was clouding her glasses.
Why was she wearing glasses? She doesn’t wear glasses.
She decided to walk towards the lake.
A long time passed before she gave up. She walked and walked and walked and nothing changed. The same trees, the same distance to the lake.
What the fuck is going on?
Have I finally lost my fucking mind?
A young child wearing a fish costume pinched her in the shoulder.
“What are you seeking?”
- “Jeez, kid…I don’t know. I would like to know where I am and how I got here. And I would like to go home.”
- “Where are the adults?”
She was confused. So she decided to walk away from the lake.
When she turned around she saw the child in the fish costume. He waved at her and jumped in the water.
She walked and walked and walked and finally gave up again. She could not change location.
Like a pin stuck on Google Maps.
She sat down, leaning against the tree that had been following her for hours now.
And then she closed her eyes.
Boom. What sounded like a suicide bomb turned out to be a building crashing down in front of her.
What the fuck?
Her heart was racing.
The building had an old broken down neon light sign hanging by one nail on the right side that said “Adults only”.
She walked in.
The first door on the left had some shitty graffiti on the side that said “paint yourself!”
She walked in and a child walked towards her.
- “Where are the adults?”
“I am the only adult here.”
“At least the kind you are looking for.”
She was about to walk out when the child said “I need to tell you something, Jenny. We need to have a discussion. Like adults.”
When I was young, I saw a painting. I looked at it for at least an eternity. It showed an old man drawing a flower on a wall in a public restroom. I need to know what happened to him, Jenny. What happened to him?
- “I don’t know who or what you are talking about.”
- “I am sorry. I don’t know.”
She had no idea what to do.
- “Please don’t cry. I will try to find out.”
He started screaming:
Reality does not represent quantum superposition because it is not real. Forget about all that. You have to sleep to dream. But you have to sleep to wake up too.
The kid ran into a room that now had a large neon light on the outside of it that said “Resting room”
She worried. But she did not want to follow.
- “So what now?”
And she could hear children screaming.
She walked towards the noise and saw a group of children dressed as adults, with high heels and business suits, sitting in a circle around what looked to be giant teddy bear.
- “What are you guys doing here?”
I am losing my mind. I am pretty sure.
She sat down and crossed her legs like they were doing.
The bear was missing an eye.
The lights turned off and the kids started mumbling and the ground started shaking.
When the lights came back on she was sitting inside a swamp boat.
It was moving terribly fast. She was on the lake she had previously been trying to reach.
The bear was in control of the boat.
- “Sir, what is going on? Where are we going?”
She started praying. Nothing was making any sense.
- “I have lost my mind, right?”
“You are your mind.”
“You are home.”
I am a total lunatic. I should have just watched TV and went to work.
Dammit. I am insane.
Then everything turned dark. The bear was lit up in red.
“Do you hear that?”
Neon lights flashing everywhere. “JUMP!”
He came at her so quickly, she hurt her wrist jumping backwards.
“If you close your eyes, you will be ok.”
So she did.
